VMS can do all those things, albeit slowly or incompatible with
Microsoft products.
Web browsers: there's Seamonkey which is ported to VMS on Alpha and
Itanium. The alternative is Mozilla which is showing its age. Mozilla
has a mail and news interface, I do not know about Seamonkey.
I run Mozilla on an AS1200 5/533 (dual cpu) and 2 GB main memory and
it is slow to start. Once it is running I have no problems using it,
other than that it lacks modern functionality (no multiple pages). It
is not noticably faster on a 600 MHz XP1000 while surfing.
There used to be a spreadsheet tool for VMS (portacalc?) no idea what
its current status is but I guess dead. It's not on the Freeware V8
cd's. Another poster mentioned Wordperfect, which ran on VAX/VMS.
If there's no need to be compatible with MS-Office then one of the
text editors may suit your needs.
It's not necessarily a stupid idea but VMS is way behind in
functionality now offered by, say, Sun's OpenOffice.
For programming VMS is my preferred platform, the software is for my
own use and amusement. I run the X displays on a pc which runs XP and
ReflectionX.
It's nice to be able to surf and read mail on a VMS platform, but the
truth is that 90% is done one the XP platform.
Linux may be an alternative but I never ever really liked unix.
