I'd be very interested to know more about this. Was this a diskless
vaxstation or did it have a SCSI drive and did that drive appear as a
DKA device ?

It would be interesting to hear from a VMS engineer (or former one) on
how VMS would behave if it were to boot from a type of drive supported
by the firmware but not by the actual OS.
