Nothing stops your Unix program from using "records".  They can be fixed 
  or variable length, unblocked or blocked, but they are *your* 
responsibility.  As far as Unix is concerned, records are a figment of 
your imagination.  A database is in no way essential to using records in 
Unix.  You want indexed sequential?  Roll your own!  Or you can buy 
commercial software that fills the gap.
