I've not read the whole thread, anyway it's possible to boot standalone backup
over the network by way of the InfoServer MOP downline loading service, using
either the real hardware thing or the software one available since V8.2 of
both OpenVMS Alpha and IA64. IIRC, it's the only way to really boot standalone
backup over the network:

(The other way, if workable, would be to cluster the MicroVAX as a satellite.)
