And who made the beautiful decision to launch three
(or was it four ?)
RISC projects in the 1980s of which none came to fruition ?
The decision to waste money on the VAX 9000 at a time
when even IBM started to deemphasize mainframes
(and invest in AIX/Power instead) ?
The decision to effectively kill the reasonably successful
Mips/Ultrix line in favour of the unproven Alpha ?

Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, even DECs own products Ultrix and OSF/1
never came "free", and neither did the associated hardware.
They were, however, more reasonably priced than VMS platforms.
