Jeff, the number of collision detect check failures is rather high. It
may be that one ore more 10BASE5 terminators are causing problems.
Either the cable is too long or a terminator is not grounded properly
or the yellow cable is not grounded at all and one of the terminators
got connected to something that did carry a potential. Isolation tape
on the terminators may be helpful. You can run ethernet outside its
specifications without encountering too many problems, providing the
load is low (<< 10%) and the protocol robust. Both DECnet and LAT are
robust, if a packet fails to arrive properly it is retransmitted. But
the retransmit interval for LAT is a lot shorter than with DECnet.
Which is good for reponse but makes it quick to fail. As others have
mentioned, LAT is a very good indicator for problems on the network.
