I will disagree with this. I think that in the 60s, 70s and until IBM
unveiled its IBM PC, I am not sure there was "hype".

The IBM PC ushered a new era. IBM had an extremely positive image, and
when it announced the IBM PC, every one jumped on that new bandwagon
because of the name and because "nobody has ever been fired for choosing
IBM". This also democratised the IT industry that had, until then, been
restricted to scientists/administrator who chose equipment logically.

DEC *almost* played that game through DECUS conferences that created a
certain amount of hype that elevated DEC in the mid 1980s. But by
failing to lower prices enough, the little hype it had was no match
against the hype from Sun and the PC industry.
