I think Microsoft's biggest challenge is adapting to a slower
replacement cycle for PCs and a population that is no longer eager to
line up a full day to be the first to get their hands on an upgrade.

I think that corporations hanging on to XP is a big sign of that.

If Microsoft starts to move towards a support business philosophy, it
will infringe on the likes of HP who sell Windows support and those
companies will then prefer selling Linux solutions that they will
support instead of selling a PC for which Microsoft will sell support.

So Microsoft may have to either scale down with reduce expectations of
new sales, or somehow branch out to someting else. This may explain its
long term attempt at having mobile devices because the replacement cycle
for mobile devices is faster than for PCs.
