Most likely your FTP client is doing something not really covered
by the RFP (or whatever they call 'em now) for FTP. Usually this
involves some preconceived notion of what a filename string contains,
or what will be returned for "human readable" formats.
Filezilla is a GUI based FTP client for Windows that seems to work
correctly with VMS. The MS command line ftp that ships with Windows
works, too. Filezilla sftp and PuTTY psftp work, also, when you
need sftp instead of ftp.
Which Windows client are you using?
