I have a copy of Hein's powerpoint presentation. Could/Should I put it
up on my web site for public access (not sure I could without his
permission ?) or perhaps the OP could contact me by email and I can send
him a copy. It descripes how indexed files work.

It was good enough to allow me to write a C program to scrounge through
the index and recuperate valid records that had been lost when VMS
allowed another application to overwrite parts of the indexed file
(LDdriver from back when it was under HP's control).
