   Sounds like it simply should have been transfered as a text file.
   Are you trying to compensate for all the mistakes the user could
   make?  It isn't really an RMS function to fix those, you're kind of
   rolling on your own.

   Of course, the quick fix in this case is "set file/attributes", or
   maybe just changing the realvent FAB or RAB fields after doing an
   $OPEN.  But then you have to know what was done wrong by the user.

   In general, how are you going to determine what mistake the user
   made?
