We used the same tapes for 800, 1600, and 6250 BPI. The only problem
was trying to do 800 BPI on our TU45. We had a requirement to
produce 1600 BPI tapes on those systems and a hard time tuning the
TU45 to do both 800 and 1600 correctly, so we fine tuned 1600 at the
cost of often not really having 800.
And tapes done in either ANSI/ASCII labels or VMS BACKUP were much
more usefull in that shop (lots of VAXen, a couple PDP-11, and two
DECSYSTEM-20), so I stopped using unblocked 80 byte EBCDIC records
