I don't remember that problem. Well, it would have been early 1980,
so maybe before VMS 3.x. The problems I remember were with ASP
(what became JES3) not recognizing AL tapes. The solution which
someone else found for me was deferred mounting.

I probably did some tapes that direction, but mostly the other way.
