I use powerline networking at home; if you shop around you can pick up
the older units (up to 14Mbps) pretty cheap, and the newer ones
(85Mbps) aren't that bad either.  The Netgear XE102 bridge units I
have did require a wintel box to configure but once that is done they
can be used to interconnect anything that can talk 10/100Base-T
without protocol restrictions (I ran LAT over mine a few times).

They don't like being plugged into an extension cord, but you can use
a heavy T-connector at the wall, plug the bridge into one of the T
outlets and the computer into the other to share a single wall socket
with no problem.  I do that at home for netcams used for dog watching
and security (one outlet provides camera power and network
connectivity) and it works out great.
