My 1990s era PSION PDA had some FLASH cards (proprietary) you could
insert in it.
The file formats for the various applications had been designed with
flash in mind.
For instance, the database application was designed such that when you
modified a record, the old record would have one bit that was originally
set to 0 written to be 1 (meaning: record deleted), and a new record was
written at end of file.
This was to greatly reduce the amout of rewriting of the flash memory
that was needed. You could compress the file (meaning: rewrite a new
version with deleted records omitted from the new copy) to release memory.
