In the early 90's, DEC had a couple of SSDs in its product line. DEC's
SSDs were HDs with HD-sized caches. Data accesses were always satisfied
by the cache, so seeks did not drag down read/write times, and the
data was safely tucked away in the HDA.

At that time, most HD caches used DRAM or SRAM chips. DEC's SSDs were
unique in that they used ARAM chips to reduce cost and power.

DEC's SSDs were designed by the Shrewsbury storage group, not the
better-known Colorado Springs storage group.

Once upon a time, DEC's storage group(s) and their products were
technically impressive. But, for computer storage, just as for computer
chips and computer software, high-quality products cannot compete with
high-volume products. In 1994, DEC sold its storage division to
Quantum; Quantum later sold its HD business to Maxtor; more recently,
Maxtor sold its HD business to Seagate.
