If this is an LCD display, the scanner might work since it would detect
different levels of reflectivity.  (just speculation on my part).


One possible way around this whole barcode would be to use the printer
port to send data to the other machine in place of the bar code reader.

aka: display data on VT terminal, then when you press a PF key on VT
terminal, it opens the terminal's printer port, sends the data to the
other computer who would see it as data coming from a bar code reader.

(easy if the terminal uses a serial port for printer output, and the
other computer uses serial for bar code input).
