Just what DID you find so "harsh and painful"?  If you didn't build page 
size dependencies into your code the conversion should not have been 
that difficult.

What DID get a little tedious was porting IBM 7090 FORTRAN to System/360 
and/or VAX/VMS.  IIRC it was 36 bit words and six bit characters to 32 
bit words and eight bit bytes.
