Zip needs a filename and possibly file size to include in the header
before it can encode/compress the data.

If you could cluster the vax with a modern machine, then you could use
the backup on the modern machine with /DATA=COMPRESS to process the
VAX's drive.

Is this a one time thing, or a regular production ?

What type of drives are on your VAX ? How much do you need for the backup ?
