So let's start from the other side.
Why not skip BACKUP and use ZIP to create the backup , or the bulk of
the backup?
I'm sure there are plenty of reasons, for specific problems, but may
you can use it for most, or for the largests files.
You could then EXCLUDE or mark as no-backup those larger files, and
create a much smaller backup set for those files better served by
backup ?!
