Yup. But the name kept internal (in files etc.), but "8600" got announced
In real it was a 11/790 because it had the PDP-11 compatibility mode in h/w.
The remove of the -11 from the VAX name was due to the removal of the
compatibility mode from the hardware (and PDP-11 compatibility went s/w).
But I digress
