Yeah, that is a valid point. VMS would treat the remote drive as an ODS
store I guess and thus copy files "raw" in native VMS form.
But there should be some qualified in the TCPIP> MOUNT command to tell
it to do the same auto-conversion that it does on the other way around.
(But then, it wouldn't be b-directional as the file you get back from
the NFS server would not be the same as the file you sent to it.
However, on the other way around, with VMS acting as server to Unix
clients, VMS do "on-the-fly" conversion of text files, it is just
unfortunate that it adds content from another file at the end of the
file to fill the last block. (and yes, the volume has high water marking).
I've followed suggestion and am now zipping. Zippping it good :-)
The zip file is being created directly on the remote system via NFS.
(since this is a binary file, there need not be any conversion).
My Alpha must know what I am up to, as one of its drives has begun to
make the bearing noises (it comes and goes). No matter what logic says,
this is always scary to hear a drive make noises that they didn't use to
make...
