Indeed.  I don't remember having an outage since I've lived here.

The latter in the case of the VAXes, the former in the case of the
ALPHA.

Actually, I have such cables, but I've never used it.

The number of errors (e.g. $ SHOW ERROR) remains constant, but the
failures have become more frequent.

Such errors look OK.

I've now made the swap.  We'll see what happens!
