Leslie may have been a Unix type but the VMS versions of TeX/LaTeX 
worked just fine years ago.  I can't say that LaTeX works now!

Used to be you said something like:
# LATEX &PLAIN mumble.tex

That doesn't work on the Unix system I last tried to run TeX/LaTeX on.
I had an old LaTeX file for a paper on "The Art of Debugging" that I 
gave at DECUS about 15 years ago.  I was going to use DVI-to-HTML so I 
could post it on my web page.  I couldn't get it to work and gave up!
