DCPS V2.3 should behave the same on both your OpenVMS Alpha V8.3 and VAX 
V7.3 systems.

Is DCPS installed and started on both systems?

DCPS V2.6 ECO 3 is the current version.  It might help, but since you 
didn't mention the printer involved, might not.

Yes, but I would first check for any OPCOM messages that appear when the 
failing job is attempted.

And, as John mentioned, I would also use Raw TCP instead of LPD if 
possible.  It allows better communication between the system and the 
printer, including error messages that might offer a clue as to what's 
going on.
