We don`t install Windows patches unless they fix a problem we are facing.
Actually the same applies for VMS except we install the priority 1 patches 
when we get a chance (usually once a year).
Windows patches often create new problems so we stay away from them.

Have you thought of creating an alias name which points to 2 IP addresses ?
I don't really know how to do it for the windows servers (our net admin 
would know) but we do this for our VMS servers. People never connect to a 
physical address but to to an alias. If a machine is down they just get 
redirected to another server.

Example:
APPSRV = NODE1 or NODE2.
People (and applications) connect to APPSRV.
No one connects to NODE1 or NODE2 directly.

When I'm finished testing LDAP here I will certainly do this before going in 
production.
