These machines didn't make rain, they made waves :-) (litterally)

While it is true that VMS wasn't used to create the ocean (although some
may have argued in the past that VMS was used to run the universe
simulation game), the fact that it ran on a whole bunch of alphas and
that this information was made public did help Alpha's cause and helping
the platform on which VMS ran helped VMS indirectly.
