[Info-vax] If I wanted to get there, I certainly wouldn't start from here (was: Re: VMS on a PC)

"Does Microsoft not bother with a Windows version for Itanium any
more?"

Yes - there are lots of IA64 machines out there running Windows. [1]
Windows server 2003 (Enterprise Edition) runs fine on IA64.
Windows server 2008 SP2 for itanium is available for download
so there doesn't seem to be any delay in getting the latest versions.
Itanium blade servers are very competitive with HP Proliant blade
servers.
(I think most of the components are now the same)
For any X32 systems that are running up against the 4GB memory limit,
then an upgrade to X64 is probably the safer option, but no longer
cheaper,
while the upgrade to IA64 will provide better performance and
scalability.

[1] For itanium 2 machines I don't know of any breakdown of usage by o/
s
but I would guess the vms figure would be a single digit
with windows and hpux at about the same percentage,
and linux leading the field.
Perhaps someone with accurate information could tell us?
