"able to echo this" is false. Some companies have strict policies on
employees publically discussing staffing plans. You're not going to hear
about staff reductions from an HP employee on a public forum.

Even if you are going to be let go, you're going to keep your mouth shut
because you don't want to loose whatever severance package you might get.

We know about VMS engineers starting their own business, and we can
infer that they are no longer HP employees, but we never heard about
their employment with HP ending. For all we know, Hoff was
unceremoniously fired for having stolen 5 pens from the office supplies
cabinet and immediatly escorted out of the building by 5 heavy built
men-in-black without any chance to say goodbye to anyone :-)

We also have no idea if HP might be using complex swiss bank
transactions to fund Hoff to work in his secret VAXcave on a Covert port
of VMS to the 8086.

I vote for F$GETSYI("ARCH_NAME") to yield "8086" :-) :-) :-)

What is sad is that our heroes slowly disapearing without a proper
sendoff. A bit like s Star Trek episode where crew members are silently
beamed off the ship one by one and by the time the captain realises what
has happened, there is nobody left on the ship.

Our heroes deserve a proper tribute.
