Sure, *BSD is cheaper, and can do as well as a Mac* - *if* you have the 
time and technical expertise to wrestle with it.  Most folks don't.
Apple's done a pretty good job of bringing U*NIX to the desktop/laptop, 
in a way that's accessible to the average Joe.  To my mind, *that's* 
something to write home about.
