Actually, my DELL PowerEdge 400SC and PowerEdge700's were both Intel
motherboard based and sold under $500 for the first (with 3 years service a
bit more) and $700 for the SCSI based 700.

Both have been running for over 5 years. The price was $0 for the OS.
No Microsoft tax or pre-installed software. Just the hardware, the diags
and the docs on PDF.

Both were server grade hardware (better than the local clone shop would
provide) and both are as reliable as I could ask of a VAX.

Nothing wrong with Dell. It's all in how you pick'em.

Also the service calls go to the server folks... not out to an outsourced
call center out of country.

Rarely had a problem getting the parts shipped to me from Dell. Never
on servers -- just on Laptops.

Never had their techs have to touch the box.

Only failure was 1 cd drive.
