well, right off the bat I can see this is not equivalent as it would
require DECWindows and, believe it or not, other than the VMS machines
in my department there was never any official support for DECWindows
here at the University.

So, what does it do?  (I no longer have any VMS machines running here in
the CS Department or at home at the moment.)
