Unless Palmer (when he was head of semi conductors and when head of
Digital) changed his mind and started to accept customers to use the
Hudson fab to capacity, they would have never had sufficient business to
warrant expensive upgrades to smaller processes.

In that environment, going "fabless" would have been the only option.
But had Digital accepted to fab other peope's chips (ontably AMD),
things might have been quite different.

All water under the bridge now.  However, hopefully people can learn
from Digital's mistakes and not repeat them.
