There might be one significant difference. Right now, 3rd parties don't
market VMS products because HP has chosen to not market VMS, sneding a
signal this product has no future.

If Oracle (or other company) spent real money to buy VMS, they would be
held accountable by shareholders (hopefully) to ensure they leverage
that investment and they would market it. (otherwise, why would they buy
it ?). Now, once they start to market VMS, then marketing of other
product would follow.

Say that in super secret talks, Carly had told Larry Ellison that HP
won't do anything with VMS but will keep it on life support. Don't you
think Ellison would tell his troups to do the same for RDB ?

But now, if VMS is under new onwership, the new onwer might have a talk
with Ellison showing how they will put life back into VMS, and you might
see Oracle put life back into RDB if they see the new owner is serious
about it.
