It would have been even cheaper not to develop Alpha at all.
DEC should have sticked to their Mips stop-gap measure
at least for their Unix/NT offerings. VMS could have stayed
on VAX 4000 until its replacement by some Ultrix follow-up.
DECs Mips line-up at least came just in time (1989),
whereas Alpha was much too late.
