I'd say it's not so much a matter of better or worse design,
but rather a matter of appropriate timing.
DEC's Mips line came out in 1989/1990, i.e. roughly in sync
with IBMs, HPs, Suns designs.
Alpha's came 1992/93 (with immature software), i.e.
much too late to catch the downsizing / open systems wave.
