If the problem is getting worse, the switch might give your some info.
Is this a managed switch you can log into and get information about
ports ? You should be able to look for traffic amounts etc.

This may sound stupid, but are the cable app properly connected ? You
could have a connector that is loose (either within the other connector,
 or the cable is loose within the connector).
