VAXes that predate the release of VMS V5.5 should run V5.5 or V5.5-2.
I'm quite certain that we ran 6000 series machines on V5.5-2.  We may 
have also run 7000 series VAXen under 5.5-2.

I don't think that there were many new VAX models after V5.5-2.  The 
4000 series MAY have needed V6.1 or V6.2.  For most of us, this stuff is 
ancient history.

This was about the time the Alpha hit the streets, ca. 1996/97. 
Suddenly, the poor old VAX couldn't keep up any longer.  The 9000 series 
MAY have been faster than the early Alphas but the handwriting was on 
the wall for all to see!
