He also gave away his ignorance of the customary way of designating 
places.  There are two towns named "Rye".  Without further 
qualification, there's no way for a hiring manager to know which one he 
means.

I happen to know where one "Rye" is because I used to live in the area. 
  I suspect that the vast majority of the hiring managers have no idea 
where either Rye is.  Perhaps a few of them will take the trouble to 
consult an atlas, but most won't!
