I've been buying mine on Ebay. I think that the last one cost
about
$25.

News to me. I've had no trouble booting any of my systems
with no keyboard and mouse. At least none which I can recall.
As I said, I'm away from the systems at the moment, so I
can't be sure about what's connected to whom, but my zx2000,
which I believe to have a USB keyboard and eek connected, seems
to have a nice assortment of DECwindows input devices:
IT $ show devi I
Device Device Error
Name Status Count
INA0: Offline 0
IMU0: Offline 0
IKU0: Offline 0
And it seems to be running DECwindows:
IT $ show system /proc = decw*
OpenVMS V8.3-1H1 on node IT 10-MAR-2009 22:33:58.63 Uptime 0
00:15:39
Pid Process Name State Pri I/O CPU Page
flts Pages
2620042E DECW$SERVER_0 HIB 8 1210 0 00:00:00.31
3303 2745
26200439 DECW$CONSOLE LEF 6 3854 0 00:00:00.40
622 646
On the other hand, the available rx2600, which I believe to
have no keyboard and eek connected, has none:
REX $ show devi I
%SYSTEM-W-NOSUCHDEV, no such device available
And seems not to be running DECwindows:
REX $ show system /proc = decw*
REX $
As already shown, both systems have at least one PCI Radeon
card installed.
I assume that if the keyboard and eek are not found, then
DECwindows doesn't start, but I certainly have had no problems
with anything halting because they're not connected. It's been
a while, and my memory has little value, but as I recall, I
started out with no graphics card or keyboard or eek on the
zx2000, and it worked fine with a serial console, too. Perhaps
the zx6000 differs radically from the zx2000 (and the rx2600)
in this respect, but I doubt it.
> So, I need to open the box and see what I'll find then.
Makes more sense than asking me.
> PS: Next problem would be then, where to get more diskspace.
Uh, more disks or bigger disks? My systems (both the zx2000
and rx2600, I believe) have external SCSI ports, so the number
of built-in disk bays is not a hard limit. Certainly, the
rx2600 is lousy with the things:
REX $ show devi /full PK
