>From previous messages from the DQDRIVER folk(s), this is the result of the 
way IDE works and will not be changed.  In order to figure out if there are 
actual devices behind the IDE controller VMS has to create a UCB for the 
potential devices before it can actually 'see' if there is a device there. 
What I advise folks to do is to add SET DEVICE DQnn:/RESET=ERROR & SET 
DEVICE DQnn:/UNAVAILABLE commands to startup.
