tape. This allows a file on disk to be used as a tape device, without
having to preallocate a certain amount of blocks. This is enabled at
CONNECT time with the qualifier /EXTEND. Also, a limit may be placed on
the maximum container file size. The default is unlimited, which means
that extending the file will stop as soon as the underlaying disk is
full."

That's some really great news! It would enable (someone) to develop a
VMS-based virtual tape "jukebox" that could truly emulate physical
tapes.

Of course, with SDLT and LTO capacities surpassing 600GB native, it
would take hundreds of terabytes - if not petabytes - of disk storage to
provide for the massive storage needs of some installations.

Dunno if LM driver has such aspirations, but I do try to think big...
