It's certainly not been necessary to have the webservers on maintenance,
but I actually I probably would not have objected to paying for it if it
had been necessary. The thing which attracts me to Linux over Microsoft
is that I find it very reliable and much easier to manage.
(I suppose that is what has got Microsoft worried - people who in the past
would have paid for server software now don't see the need to do so, at
least for various types of servers, especially given the quality of the
various open source alternatives).
For sure however, any replacement for my core VMS infrastructure is going
to get the same paid for support packages as the VMS setup currently does.

No, I've got no plans to go down that route. All the new applications I
have planned have the Linux webservers been the public facing front end
and VMS acting in the data serving role.
