Dear Newsgroup,
This is a copy of an email I sent out to the VMS SIG, and my email
distribution list. I just wanted to make sure that you have a copy.
Warm Regards as always,
Sue
++++++++++++
Dear Folks,
I wanted to send you email with some updates on what I have heard in
the community lately that I thought might interest you. I would like
to do this on a regular basis, so if you have any information you
would like me to add just let me know. Additionally I have included
an update on and what is going on with me personally (bottom of this
message). Also on the personal side, I had lunch with Mark Gorham
three weeks ago, he sends his warm regards.
Sorry for any duplications.

1.0 In November there will be a German Connect event in Darmstadt
Germany Nov 18-20 . One of the exciting parts of this German event
is that there will be some of the Classic VMS folks in attendance.
For example Andy Goldstein is giving talks on VMS as is John Covert
and Brad McCusker, Ken Surplice. Obviously the local Ambassadors
Guenter Kriebel and Thilo Lauer are also on the agenda. There will be
Partner sessions done by eCube, Nemonix, Software Concepts, Stromasys
In addition to the above sessions, I will be in the Multis booth
during the event where I am planning on also having the VMS Quilt.
This will be the first time the VMS Quilt will ever have traveled
outside of the local HP office and New England.
Here is the URL for the event:

2.0 In September I was at the Technical Update Days as part of the
eCube Technical Update Days Team.
While in Paris I had the chance to meet a customer they are Europe's
largest printer for books and
magazines. They do not even look at a job unless it’s a million
copies or more. They use 47 million tons
of paper a day*** when I first sent this to the SIG and Ambassadors I
said a week, but have been corrected
. (I am sure they recycle). VMS of course, and I was sad because I
had not heard of
them before this year. And it is such a great story.

3.0 Gartner
I assume you have noticed the Gartner report on the HP OpenVMS
website? You do have to fill out a questionnaire to receive. Here is
the url, just click on Gartner.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.0 OpenVMS.Org
While we are talking I thought you might like to know that Ken Farmer
has been working updating the
OpenVMS.Org web site in the last few weeks. You may want to let Ken
know that you appreciate the
work that he continues to do for us. We are very fortunate to have a
website and someone like Ken, not
every community does.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5.0 Staying connected by using Linked In
If you are looking around for a way to stay connected with folks that
you have known over the years.
You may want to try "linked in" as a resource.
www.linkedin.com
Linked In also has some great groups on Rdb, Digital, VMS, Connect
where you will find plenty of
folks with similar interests and folks you know.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6.0 Partner - Software Concepts International
You may want to check out Software Concepts International Website
there is a great presentation
for folks that have had to manage mission critical Rdb database's
their web site is www.SCIINC.com

7.0 Oracle Rdb Customer feedback
Speaking of Oracle Rdb. There was recently a Rdb Forum at the Oracle
office in Nashua NH.
One of the customers attending wrote a very interesting note and
posted it in Comp.OS.VMS.
here is the direct link to his post
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.os.vms/browse_thread/thread/2a3c8e5f53f64160?hl=en#
Here are what I thought were the highlights from his comments.
) Oracle on OpenVMS continues because Oracle Database & Oracle Rdb
business is healthy & valuable
2) Cooperation between Oracle & HP development teams means better
performance and manageability for you
3) 150,000+ combined customers…
– 41% of Oracle customers run HP servers
– 70% mid-range HP-UX servers & 90% of Superdomes run Oracle
– 90+% HP OpenVMS database servers use Oracle (either DB or RDB)
The following two points were presented verbally (so are not in the
presentation material)
4) Itanium blades (running OpenVMS) are making new inroads into
semiconductor manufacturing. 5) Itanium blades will soon appear with
32 and 64 cores

8.0 Maklee Engineering
Maklee - And since I seem to be on a Oracle Rdb role, I noticed that
Guy has now expanded Maklee to include the following;
Maklee Engineering is pleased to offer a new service – combined
Oracle Tuning & Training in a three-day seminar conducted on-site in
your Oracle environment.
Tuning Oracle is not a simple task, yet its rewards are immense – it
is not uncommon for precise tuning to result in a ten-fold performance
increase
And I am sure you are very well aware of Guy and Christian's
capabilities when it gets to tuning systems!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CSSC has developed classes for new VMS people and is even offering
free training, many thanks to
Bill P for this
www.CSSCORP.com
CCSS - Computer Consulting System Services is offering online web-
based OpenVMS training with certificate. There are also free OpenVMS
accounts
associated with the courses - no time limits. Will provide development
tools (compilers) on request.
You can find information at:

and follow the "Interactive Learning" link...

One of my favorite customer finds this week was at Volvo. Volvo is
just amazing and if you go to their web site and mention VMS in their
search you get things such as the following
the picture of the tunnel you can see here

I just wanted to give you an update on how things are going for me
personally.
As you know I work very happily part time at eCube Systems. At eCube
we work with VMS customers by leveraging their existing technology to
meet their evolving business needs with the use of Eclipse and our
flagship product, Nxtware Remote. I have been here at eCube since
July and we had an excellent time working with the Technical Update
Team in Europe. And of course the customers were awesome.
www.ecubesystems.com and my email is Sue at ecubesystems.com
Starting last week I have ALSO joined Nemonix Engineering part time.
Nemonix Engineering specializes in support of VAX and Alpha hardware.
Nemonix will rebuild your VAX and Alpha's allowing you the security
and freedom to move forward to Integrity if and when you are able to
at your speed. Nemonix has also developed new products for these
venerable machines. We now have a 3.5 SCSI Ultra Wide Flash Drive
(16GB-128GB) is available is 68 or 80 pin connectors. Mechanical
Drives are also available. Sue_Skonetski at nemonixengineering.com
So now I get to work with Partners covering a wide base of customers
from VAX to Integrity. And from 5.1 to 8.3.
Warm Regards as always,
Sue
