So he left Digital while it was being sabotaged and dismembered by
Palmer and joined Microsoft at a time where it was working to use the NT
kernel for its mass market machines. Those are large engineering projects.

DEC isn 1995 has finihed the port to Alpha and VMS was in a "Digital is
killing VMS"  stage, so my guess is that engineering wasn't given very
interesting projects.

So the "Until Microsoft" should have been  "Until I joined Microsoft".
This changes the context of Gordon Bell's statement.
