The leading period is the UN*Xly way of making a file "hidden" (users
with root privelege need to us the "-a" option ot the "ls" command to
see "hidden" files. "root" sees them by default.

...all of which is generally meaningless outside of /bin/ls.

There is no VMS parallel short of SET FILE/REMOVE.
