   Ever since Fortran-77 introduced CHARACTER data type and operators,
   we did tons of string manipulation quite readily in Fortran.

   It dosn't have all the power of the C RTL, or string processing
   languages like SNPOBOL, but at east you don't have to call
   three functions just to contatenate two substrings.
