Thanks, I appreciate the pointer; sorry it took me a couple of days
to get back to working on this.
I tried adding
idmap uid = 5000 - 6000
idmap gid = 5000 - 6000
to my smb.conf and that eliminated the errors about "idmap uid range
missing or invalid" and "idmap will be unable to map foreign SIDs".
However I still get "Possible deadlock: Trying to lookup SID S-1-1-0
with passdb backend," the connection still times out, SMBD still hangs
up and eventually dies with an ACCVIO. Pretty much the same as
before.
BTW, I just picked this mapping range (5000 - 6000) at random. I
still don't know what Samba is doing with these values - in the bigger
picture I understand, yes, but not in my situtation with no domain
controller, no login and "force user =...". Do I have to actually
create accounts or do anything else other than provide Samba with this
dummy mapping?
Actually, the documentation you referred me to even says "A
standalone Samba server is an implementation that is not a member of a
Windows NT4 domain, a Windows 200X Active Directory domain, or a Samba
domain. By definition, this means that users and groups will be
created and controlled locally, and the identity of a network user
must match a local UNIX/Linux user login. The IDMAP facility is
therefore of little to no interest, winbind will not be necessary, and
the IDMAP facility will not be relevant or of interest."
Thanks again,
Bob
