WPSPLUS started off well before PCs could handle large documents. While
it remained character cell, it was still well ahead in features and
reliability compared to the DOS and Windows 3.1 based word processors.
And it was integrated into email for ALL-IN-1 which means that
secretaries had a full fledged word processor they were familiar with
to write emails, something which Windows (and even the Mac) didn't have.
And, ALLIN-1 which started in early 1980s provided an evolutionary path
all the way to POP and IMAP and MAPI support whilst Windows had many
totally different and incompatible email infrastructures until Exchange
arrived and has pretty much remained the standard since mid/late 1990s.
ALLIN-1 was one of many sacrificial offerings Palmer made to Gates in
order to get the right to sell Microsoft products. Nobody had told
Palmer that anyone could sell MS products without the need for
sacrificial offerings.
