Just backing up a bit to where you mentioned: -

For the record, let me point out that there is no absolutely technical
requirement for the "C library" at all. For an example of a COBOL program
that could quite happily send HTTP headers down the line please see: -

I really wish he would've backed himeself for the feature-rich, VMS-specific
XHR$ library rather than pick up someone else's cast-offs. (Could they
finally have exhausted the physics of "free time"?)

I'll reply to you off-line with the way I'd do it. It will be of interest to
you'd like: -
- Single-Signon without session-hijackable cookie bollocks?
- Single, persistent network connection across multiple active tabs in a
browser instance?
- Full-on synchronous of asynchrous i/o capability?
- 1:M relationship between messages sent to received?
- Retention of server-affinity if/when needed?

It's alright if you're into that sort of thing I suppose. Works for me!

But as you're already using Apache let me point you at a couple of links
that may help you understand where HP/VMS (if not it's seedy underbelly) has
been steering customers:-
